Abstract:
An integrative framework is used to analyse multiple pathways connecting climate change, natural resources, human security and societal instability. The presentation discusses how climate stressors such as weather extremes, water, food and health risks interact with social fragility, migration, conflict and cooperation, possibly multiplied through tipping points, compound effects and cascading events. Regional hot spots serve as examples to assess complex interactions and transformations.

About the speaker:
Juergen Scheffran is Professor of Geography at Hamburg University and chair of the Research Group Climate Change and Security (CLISEC) at the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability and the Climate Cluster CLICCS. After the study of physics, he worked in interdisciplinary research groups in climate, complexity and conflict studies at the Universities of Marburg, Darmstadt, Paris and Illinois and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
