Another great question from user Nathan who asks, what are the different uses to a seemingly easy word like 'otherwise'. Well, in today's Qing Wen we explore some of the nuances and give you some high-use example sentences to get your head around this one.

See and learn the difference between 否則，不然 and 要不, which are translated as "otherwise" but are used in different situations.

否则 (fǒuzé) - Otherwise (Strong)
你不要跟我女朋友说话否则我会杀了你 (nǐ bù yào gēn wǒ nǚpéngyou shuōhuà fǒuzé wǒ huì shā le nǐ) - Don't speak to my girl otherwise I'll kill you!
不然 (bùrán) - Otherwise
早一点到车站不然会来不及 (zǎo yīdiǎn dào chēzhàn bùrán huì láibují) - Arrive at the station earlier, otherwise we might not have time.
要不 (yàobu) - Otherwise
下雨了要不我们别去吧 (xiàyǔ le yàobu wǒmen bié qù ba) - It's raining (now), how about we don't go.
你不喜欢这家餐厅要不我们去别家吧 (nǐ bù xǐhuan zhè jiā cāntīng yàobu wǒmen qù biéjiā ba) - (if) you don't like this restaurant, how about we go to another one.
你走要不我走吧 (nǐ zǒu yàobu wǒ zǒu ba) - You go otherwise I'll go.
